The reading

Marvin and his friend Leah bring their lunches to a table at school. Leah has news about a model she built. "Can I tell you about it now?" she asks. Marvin points to a small card beside his tray. It says, "I want a quiet few minutes first." He uses the card when finding spoken words takes longer.

Leah reads the card. "After you eat?" she asks. Marvin nods. Leah puts her model picture beside her lunch so she can show it later. They eat at the same table without needing to talk right away.

When Marvin is ready, he moves the card into his bag. "Tell me about the model," he says. Leah shows him its paper roof. Marvin asks how she made it stay up. Leah explains the folded corners. Their conversation starts later than Leah first expected, but both friends have a chance to take part.
